Task 6 "Product packaging"

Packaging design is important in marketing terms. This essential marketing component greatly influences customers and buyers on one product over another. Colorful, creative and insightful designs on packages definitely impact our minds and that is how marketers often induce us to make irrational buying choices (based on our feelings and taste) rather than well-thought ones. That is why the role of packaging design has such strategic significance in marketing and sales and is even more important than we could ever think.

In times of booming globalization and market competition, to win more competitive advantages over rivals, top players creatively develop effective packaging designs that exclude standard approaches to the idea of conventional packaging. Packaging has become important means to show the unique qualities and features of a product. Namely owing to the art of packaging design some products stand out from the rest. A product is what we consume, while packaging is what inspires us to buy a product.

The role of a good packaging designer is really important. First of all the approach to packaging should be ultimately creative. The messages should work with the colors, signs, logos and other unique features of a product. Furthermore, packaging designer should monitor the market for similar products and offered designs to come up with something unique, impressive, and inspirational. Finally, it is worthy to note that the products of less quality and less marketed brands can be effectively sold owing to the creative marketing and packaging.

to Reduce Carbon Footprint of Tropicana

Tesco to label own-brand products with carbon footprint

A carbon footprint is an essential component that should be utilized on all packaging designs as it reminds buyers about CO2 emissions. Finally, the concept of green packaging should be promoted as far as possible as it addresses important environmental concerns to the society. Many signs utilized on packages serve as influential reminders of the producers’ eco-friendliness.

Task 5

Social responsibility and ethics in graphic design has its advocates in the public and private sectors, in big and small organizations as well as on an individuals. Design itself is a problem-solving process. Designers play big role not only responding, but also initiating. They bring their professional skills and personal beliefs into alignment. Through their work, graphic designers have the responsibility and an opportunity to place basic values into their work, to replicate the behavior that people want to see in the world.
When undertaking complicated issues, graphic designers are aware of larger contexts and, in various instances, the degree of the challenge moves them beyond their training. They partner with various experts like political scientists, anthropologists, biologists and sociologists. To such collaborations graphic designers bring unique historical perspective, cross-cultural awareness, humanist roots, critical thinking, project leadership, etc.
Graphic designers are also actively engaged in the political process to reset priorities and reshape institutions. Design is a unique and powerful tool for shaping the planet and how people live in it. Ethical design is a way to ensure diversity, health and abundance to future generations and to contribute to the betterment of all.

In mid 80’s Tibor Kalman was among the two major names that greatly changed graphic design. Kalman urged fellow designers to assume the responsibility for their own work as designers and as citizens. Throughout his career he prodded designers to refuse accepting any client’s product at its face value and to question the effects of their work. Kalman greatly motivated designers to employ their work platform to boost public awareness of a range of social issues.

David Berman, Fellow and Ethics Chair of the Society of Graphic Designers of Canada and Canadian communication designer and author, worked to develop a new code of ethics for graphic designers which embraced ethics and social responsibility for graphic designers. His work on executing codes of ethics for national professional designers associations has extended globally.

Across the world as well as on an personal level, graphic designers are being challenged to develop work that is socially responsible and ethical.

Task 4 " CSR "

Corporate Social responsibility is a concept that obliges corporations to commit non-profit obligations before their stakeholders, community they serve and target markets alongside their for-profit concerns. CSR is about corporate citizenship, corporate conscience, and sustainable social performance of the businesses. Namely CSR makes today’s companies more socially responsible through corporate self-regulation and consideration of social, environmental, charity and other socially concerns. Through CSR policies companies monitor and ensure their active support to ethical standards as well as the international norms of sustainability.
On the other hand, the lack of corporate ethics and social responsibility significantly downsizes company’s reputation and good standing in the eyes of its stakeholders, customers, agents, suppliers and public. CSR is therefore perceived as an essential strategic tool to win competitive positions, customer loyalty, and good name on the competitive market in a non-profit way.

IKEA :

           Cadbury :

Marks & Spencer :

Many companies (IKEA, Cadbury, and Marks & Spencer etc) have developed a positive CSR image throughout the decades of their expansion on international markets. This is rather important for their good standing and brand promotion on the globally competitive markets. Their CSR policies can serve as examples to be followed by other market players as they established corporate codes of conduct that place their social and ethical obligations over the profit-making concerns. The organizations like these are therefore appealing to the general public, while the extensive emphasis on social issues enables them to win new target markets and increase profits.

As a designer, I feel socially responsible too. This is because I know that every person can donate for charity, help a child, and contribute to humanitarian aid or socially-oriented campaigns. In the world around us many people are daily suffering. There are many regions in Asia and Africa where people are even starving on scarce food and water supplies. Being aware of this, as any person I do not want to wait until a big corporation or a global organization like UN or World Bank donates to these people. I am confident I can help these people on my own, and everyone can to make the world a better place. Maybe by starting a campaign or volunteer in an existing campaign. I can help also this non profit campaign to design ads and to help them communicate with people to get the donations .
As humans we should not wait until one more Syrian child dies tomorrow, we should act today. be responsible citizens, it is rather important that each of us develops a sense of individual responsibility for the world around us. I am 100% confident that every more or less conscious person can benefit socially-oriented initiatives in this or other ways.
At least, everyone can watch for environmental safety and elimination of pollution in our immediate neighborhoods. Every person can benefit by starting with the smallest activity like picking a paper from a pavement or helping an elderly to pass the crossing. These deeds are small and may seem like a drop in the ocean, though everyone should start with something, get fonder, more socially responsible, set a positive example to others, and make up socially responsible citizens around us.
